Typefaces became a very important thing during this time period.

The standard handwritten typefaces for the time were slowly being phased out.  Prior to the birth of the printing press, the primary style of text was done by scribes in a calligraphic typeface, all being handwritten.  The different parts of the world each had their own styles of typefaces before the printing press.  During the Roman Empire a typeface called ‘Uncial’ was used which generally evoked the Celtic Round hand style typefaces.  During the time of Charlemagne, the typeface called ‘Carolingian lettering’ was used as a standard typeface for the Holy Roman Empire.
