Shape is an important element to highlight the areas of our designs.

We need shape to help not only create dimension, but it can also be used to highlight specific and important information in our designs.  Beyond that, and even more basic, we use shape to conduct white space, or negative space, as well as positive space.  Our visual interpretation relies heavily on both positive and negative space in our design work.  Negative space can be a good thing in a design.  If you do not leave enough negative space in our design work, it is possible for the viewer to feel trapped and claustrophobic.  Using Negative space to create different shapes can help unify the design. “Understanding the effect of negative space and how to use it to your advantage in a design is one of the most important techniques a designer can learn, and can make the difference between a good design and a great design.” ("A Graphic Design Primer, Part 1: The Elements of a Design").
