Lithography is the art of creating an image or text on limestone with inks and crayons and then reproducing it.

The printing press used items that were carved to print with, while Lithography used the opposite.  The process of lithography included using specific inks or crayons that were made with specific chemical greases.  After using them on the stone, the image would become permanent.  The stone is then wetted, and all areas that contain that ink or crayon will be retained while the others repel. “The characteristic of this printing technique lies in the fact that the image area and the non-image area react differently to the presence of ink”. Lithography was a much cheaper way to mass produce. Aloys Senefelder is credited with the creation of Lithography. (“Offset Lithography”)
