The Principles of Composition

The next topic of our discussion on Graphic Design being the bridge to communication is the principles of composition.  Composition is defined as “the act or process of composing; specifically: arrangement into specific proportion or relation and especially into artistic form” (Merriam-Webster’s).  Composition is your layout.  It is very important in communicating your design.  By using your elements and principles of design, we can create a well thought out and strong composition.  Our basic principles of composition that we will be covering are single visual composition, divine proportion, focal point, grids, gestalt principles, and Z layouts. ("A Graphic Design Primer, Part III: Basics of Composition.")
