The scale of the components of your design is known as the proportion.

Proportion is easily often compared to the human form.  In drawing studies, you study the proportions of the face to insure your correct proportions.  An example is the ‘rule of five eyes’.  The rule states that five eyes should fit across a straight on face horizontally.  This helps insure that one component of your design isn’t getting more recognition than another.  Another example would be a sale that you may be designing a marketing piece for.  You would not what to put the message of a Sale in tiny letters at the bottom of the piece.  The same goes for your designs in general.  Important information can be showcased by using proportions to enhance the important parts of the message that are being communicated to your viewer.
