The lines that we use in our designs will make up the visual path for our eye to travel.

Without a visual hierarchy of line, our eye will not have a path to follow.  The line in the design may not necessarily be obvious, but you can rest assured somewhere in the design there is line. Margins can also create the visual appearance and separation of line.  It is important to remember that the visual weight of your line also pays an important aspect in your design.  Straight thick lines can call visual attention to themselves.  They are static and rigid.  For a more free flowing and natural design, designers use curved lines to create a dynamic flowing piece.  This can also help create our next topic, shape, in design.
